For parents

Thinking about a pilot career for your son or daughter?

It's a big decision and a big investment. Here is what we'd want to know if it were our own child, written by airline pilots and training captains.

Parents can also complete the pathway assessment on their child's behalf.

What parents need to know

  1. EducationMost routes expect maths and physics at senior school level. English language proficiency is also a requirement, to ensure you gain a radio licence.
  2. MedicalsAn airline career needs a Class 1 medical. Book it before paying for training so there are no surprises.
  3. TrainingGround school plus flying. A commercial licence typically takes 12 to 24 months full time, depending on route.
  4. LicensingThe licence is issued by a national regulator. Our students train to the FAA licence and we help them convert to EASA.
  5. CostsEvery family receives a full written breakdown before committing: flying, ground school, exams, accommodation and visa support.
  6. TimeProgress sets the pace. Florida's flying weather keeps weather delays to a minimum, and we report progress home every week.
  7. Training locationsOur students take their PPL theory as an after-school activity, at school or online at home, then fly in Florida in the summer, or across the winter and spring breaks, to complete their licence.
  8. Career pathwaysWith a commercial licence, instrument and multi-engine ratings, a frozen ATPL (airline-entry level) and an EASA licence, graduates can apply directly to the many airlines recruiting first officers.
  9. If not an airlineA commercial licence with instrument and multi-engine ratings also leads to instructing, corporate, charter and aviation management roles.
